Western Medical Acupuncture (WMA)

Jarvia trained with the British Medical Acupuncture Society

Western Medical Acupuncture is a therapeutic modality involving the insertion of fine needles; it is an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and the principles of evidence based medicine. Jarvia trained with the British Medical Acupuncture Society.

Acupuncture is a useful method for the treatment of a variety of conditions such as pain, nausea, migraines, arthritis, menstrual cramps, low back pain, tennis elbow and many more conditions. Studies have shown that acupuncture influences both the central and peripheral nervous systems. It acts mainly by stimulating the nervous system, and its known modes of action include local antidromic axon reflexes, segmental and extrasegmental neuromodulation, and other central nervous system effects. Further evidence indicates that acupuncture stimulates the release of brain chemicals such as endorphins, which function to relieve pain. Research also suggests that acupuncture increases immune system functioning, improves the circulatory system, decreases muscle tightness, and increases joint flexibility. Western medical acupuncture is mainly used to treat musculoskeletal pain, including myofascial trigger point pain. Clinical trials lend credence to these results: acupuncture has been shown to bring about significant improvement for a variety of diseases and musculoskeletal problems
